🌱 Blackthorn or Sloe (Prunus spinosa) 🌿 is a hardy deciduous shrub or small tree reaching up to 5 meters tall with dense, stiff, spiny branches and dark blackish bark. Leaves are oval, 2–4.5 cm long and 1.2–2 cm wide, with serrated margins. In early spring, creamy-white flowers 🌸 appear before the leaves, are hermaphroditic, and attract bees for pollination. The tree produces small, black-purple sloes 🍇 10–12 mm in diameter that ripen in autumn. Fresh fruits are very astringent, but the flavor softens after first frosts or freezing, making them ideal for preserves, jams, pies, liqueurs like sloe gin, pacharan, prunelle, or bargnolino, and even fermented wines.
Blackthorn is frequently used as a cattle-proof hedge in Europe due to its dense spiny growth. Its wood 🌳 is durable, burns slowly as firewood, and is traditionally used for walking sticks (shillelagh), tool handles, and decorative crafts. The foliage supports many insects, including larvae of Lepidoptera, making it valuable for wildlife gardens.
