Large-fruited ginger seeds Renealmia alpinia Oaxacan Purple

Price for Package of 3 seeds.

Renealmia alpinia is a flowering plant species native to the Americas, where it grows from southern Mexico through much of South America, though not in the Southern Cone. It can also be found on several Caribbean islands.

This vigorous tropical ginger produces tall leafy shoots with undulate foliage and colorful reddish inflorescences spikes that appear from the ground between the leafy shoots and are followed by larger, oblong fruits with yellowish-orange pulp that are red at first and ripen to blackish purple.

This rare, large-fruited form is cultivated in Oaxaca, Mexico, where the fruits are popular and often sold in local markets to make a specialty soup with Hoja Santa (Piper auritum).
