🌿 Common Flax Seeds (Linum usitatissimum)

💰 Price: Package of 120 (1g) seeds

Flax, also known as common flax or linseed, is one of the oldest cultivated crops on Earth and among the most versatile plants ever grown. Its scientific name, Linum usitatissimum, means “the most useful”, highlighting its importance to human civilization. Belonging to the Linaceae family, flax has been grown for over 9,000 years, providing fiber, food, and natural medicine.

This elegant plant grows up to 1.2 meters tall, featuring slender green stems, narrow lanceolate leaves, and charming pale blue flowers with five petals. After flowering, it forms small dry capsules containing shiny brown seeds — the famous flax seeds or linseeds.

Flax thrives in cool climates and well-drained loamy soils, making it a popular and sustainable crop in Europe, Asia, and North America. Its simple beauty and incredible usefulness make it both an ornamental and practical plant for every garden.

🌸 Uses and Benefits

Flax is often called the plant of a thousand uses, offering value in many areas:

  • 🧴 Oil Source: Flax seeds yield flaxseed oil (linseed oil), rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. It’s used both as a nutritional supplement and in paints, varnishes, and wood finishes.

  • 🪡 Textile Fiber: From flax stems come the famous linen fibers, stronger than cotton, naturally smooth, and perfect for high-quality fabrics.

  • 🥗 Nutrition: Each 100 g of ground flax contains about 450 kcal, 20 g protein, 41 g fat, and 28 g fiber. It supports heart health, balances cholesterol, and aids digestion.

  • 🌿 Traditional Medicine: Mentioned in Ayurveda and Austrian folk medicine, flax has been used to treat coughs, fever, rheumatism, and skin inflammation.

Both brown and golden (yellow) flax seeds are highly nutritious. The yellow solin (Linola) type differs mainly in having lower Omega-3 content.

🏺 History

Archaeological evidence shows flax use as early as 30,000 years ago in Georgia’s Dzudzuana Cave, where ancient humans spun and dyed wild flax fibers.
It was widely cultivated in Ancient Egypt, where priests wore only linen as a symbol of purity, and mummies were wrapped in fine flax cloth.
The Phoenicians traded Egyptian linen across the Mediterranean, while the Romans used flax for ship sails and garments.

During the Middle Ages, Flanders became Europe’s center of linen production. In the 8th century, Charlemagne encouraged flax cultivation for health and hygiene. Later, settlers introduced it to North America, where it thrived until cotton replaced it as the main textile fiber. Today, flax remains a symbol of sustainability and natural living.

🧑‍🌾 Cultivation Tips

Flax prefers deep, fertile soils rich in organic matter. Avoid heavy clays and overly sandy ground. It grows best in cool, moist climates and needs little fertilizer or pesticides.
🌾 Sow seeds early in spring directly outdoors; seedlings appear quickly, reaching 10–15 cm in just weeks and 80–100 cm by mid-season.

Harvest occurs around 100 days after sowing, once stems turn yellow and seed capsules start splitting. The crop can be harvested for either fiber or seeds. For seed production, allow full capsule maturity before threshing.

Flax farming is eco-friendly, improving soil texture and reducing weed growth — ideal for organic and sustainable gardeners.
