Matteuccia struthiopteris, commonly known as ostrich fern, fiddlehead fern, or shuttlecock fern, is a crown-forming, colony-forming fern native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere 🌍, including central and northern Europe, northern Asia, and northern North America. The species name struthiopteris comes from Ancient Greek: struthio (ostrich) and pterion (wing), inspired by the elegant vertical fronds resembling ostrich plumes 🪶.
Plant Description
Ostrich ferns grow from a vertical crown and spread via lateral stolons, forming dense colonies that are resistant to floodwaters 💧. The fronds are dimorphic:

Sterile fronds: Tall and green, 100–170 cm (39–67 in) high, 20–35 cm (7.9–13.8 in) wide, tapering gracefully at both ends.

Fertile fronds: Shorter, 40–60 cm (16–24 in), brown when ripe, with modified leaf tissue protecting the sporangia 🌾. Fertile fronds persist erect through winter, releasing spores in early spring 🌱.
Uses and Cultivation
The ostrich fern is highly valued as an ornamental plant for gardens and has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit 🏆. It prefers protected locations, as strong wind and hail can damage the delicate foliage 🌿. The tightly coiled immature fronds, called fiddleheads, are edible after cooking and considered a seasonal delicacy in northeastern North America and Japan (“kogomi” in Japanese) 🍽️.
