Price: Package of 5 Seeds
Acacia mangium, commonly known as Black Wattle, Hickory Wattle, Mangium, or Forest Mangrove, is a flowering tree in the pea family (Fabaceae) native to northeastern Queensland in Australia, the Western Province of Papua New Guinea, Papua, and the eastern Maluku Islands. It is highly versatile, used for timber, industrial applications, ecological restoration, and soil management.
The tree can grow up to 30 metres (98 ft), typically with a straight, cylindrical trunk, making it ideal for plantation forestry. It produces about 142,000 seeds per kilogram. To break dormancy and ensure fast germination (often exceeding 75%), mature seeds require pre-germination treatments such as mechanical scarification (scratching the surface) or soaking in boiling water. Like many legumes, Acacia mangium fixes nitrogen in the soil, enriching it for surrounding crops and plants.
πΏ Cultivation and Growing Conditions
A. mangium is a fast-growing species, especially near the equator, with an average annual height increase of 3β4 metres. In regions further from the equator, growth is slower. The species tolerates low-fertility soils and impeded drainage but prefers fertile, well-drained sites. Soil depth and topography significantly influence growth and yield. For plantation or agroforestry projects, A. mangium can provide shade to understory plants while improving soil nitrogen content through its root system. Seedlings should be planted in deep pots to accommodate the taproot and transplanted carefully once established.
π³ Uses and Applications
Timber:
Acacia mangium produces heavy, hard, strong, and durable timber, resistant to warping or cracking. Its heartwood is brownish-yellow with a medium texture and shiny appearance. This timber is highly suitable for furniture, doors, window frames, parquet flooring tiles, and decorative artifacts.
Industrial Use:
Due to occasional cracking and temperamental behavior for high-precision furniture, A. mangium timber is widely used in the paper pulp and biomass fuel industries. Trees are chipped and processed in bulk, often delivered by the ton with controlled moisture levels.
Soil Management and Ecological Restoration:
The treeβs intensive rooting system increases nitrogen turnover in the topsoil and improves mineral N availability, which benefits mixed-species plantations. Its fast growth and deep roots make it ideal for rehabilitating degraded tropical lands, including mining wastelands. In Goa, India, it is used to stabilize lateritic mine dumps, while in Colombia, it has restored land affected by open-pit gold mining.
π± Planting and Germination Tips
-
Pre-germination: Scarification or soaking in boiling water for fast germination.
-
Seed soaking: Change water frequently to remove germination inhibitors.
-
Potting: Use deep containers to support the taproot.
-
Growth: Trees mature rapidly; can be used in agroforestry or reforestation projects within a few years.
π‘ Additional Care Tips
-
Ensure fertile, well-drained soil when possible.
-
Regular watering without waterlogging is essential.
-
Monitor for pests and remove damaged leaves or branches promptly.
-
Mulching improves soil moisture retention and stabilizes temperature.
