Goliath Giant Onion Seeds allow you to grow one of the most impressive onion varieties available. This specific variety is famous for producing massive, heavy bulbs. It is a highly productive variety. You can grow it directly from seed with great success. However, keep in mind that its breeding time is quite long. The bulbs grow very large and require a significant amount of growing space. Each onion is spherical and covered in light brown skin. These onions have a low dry matter content. This makes them exceptionally juicy and tender. The taste is pleasantly sweet and not pungent at all. Because of this, they are perfect for fresh consumption. Use them in salads or as a topping for burgers. Please note that they cannot be stored for a long time. They are best enjoyed fresh from the garden.
🌱 🚜 Professional Sowing Techniques for Italian Onions
Italian onions, like the Goliath, are long-day onions. They perform best at higher latitudes. This means regions north of southern Virginia or San Francisco. You can direct seed them in early spring. However, you will get the largest bulbs by growing seedlings first. Follow these simple techniques for perfect results. For transplants, start your seedlings 10 to 12 weeks before setting them out. You can move them outside about two or three weeks before the last frost.
Use a quality growing mix about 4 inches (10.16 cm) deep in a flat. You can make your own mix with peat and compost. Add a handful of lime per bushel of mix. Wet the mixture thoroughly before planting. Place your onion seed on top. Try to space the seeds about 1/4 to 1/2 inch (0.63 to 1.27 cm) apart. Cover them with 1/4 inch (0.63 cm) of soil or vermiculite. Water them again and keep them in a warm place. Move them under grow lights as soon as they germinate. You can begin feeding them one week after germination. Give them plenty of space to grow. Pull and discard any seedlings closer than 1/2 inch (1.27 cm). If they grow too tall, give them a "haircut" with scissors. Snip off the top inch or two (2.54 to 5.08 cm) of the seedlings.

Hardening off is a vital step for success. Begin this process 7 to 10 days before planting outside. Place your seedlings in a sheltered spot for a few hours daily. Increase the time outside every day. To plant out, prepare a well-dug bed with high fertility. Onions benefit greatly from soil with high phosphorus content. Plant them about 3 inches (7.62 cm) apart in rows. Keep the rows at least 10 inches (25.4 cm) apart. This ensures they have the room to become giants. Keep the plants well-watered throughout the entire season. These onions thrive in fertile soil. Give your crop several side dressings of nutrients.

Growing your own sets is very easy. It makes life easier for the next spring season. Sow your seed for sets 3 to 4 months before a hard frost. Prepare a nice bed with good compost. Rake the soil well. Scatter your onion seeds about 1/4 inch (0.63 cm) apart. Firm them down by hand. Cover them with 1/4 inch (0.63 cm) of soil. Keep them well-watered until they germinate. Just let them grow until the tops die back. This usually happens around the first frost. After a good frost, pull your onions. They should be about the size of a marble. Store them in a cool, dry place for a few weeks. Do not wash off any dirt yet. Once dried, pack them in mesh bags. Ensure there is good air circulation in the bags. Store them over winter in a cool and dry place.

In northern regions, you can direct seed in well-prepared beds. Do this about 4 weeks before the last frost date. Try to place seeds at least an inch (2.54 cm) apart. It is better to cover them with 1/4 inch (0.63 cm) of soil. Germination usually takes about two weeks. Keep the area well-watered at all times. Once they reach 3 or 4 inches (7.62 or 10.16 cm), begin thinning them out. Leave at least an inch (2.54 cm) between each onion. Pull any weeds immediately. Weeds are the biggest problem when growing from seed. They steal nutrients and space from your giant onions. Goliath onions will be ready for harvest in late summer or early autumn.
