Egyptian Walking Onions, also known as Tree Onions, Topsetting Onions, and Winter Onions, are a unique and hardy variety of onion that provides both functional and ornamental value in any garden. Their fascinating self-propagating nature means that once planted, they will keep growing year after year with minimal effort on your part.
These onions are perennials, which means they will come back year after year, producing new sets of onions at the top of the plant, which "walk" across the garden as they fall and replant themselves! 🏃♂️🌱 Known for their hardiness, they can withstand extreme cold, with some varieties able to thrive in temperatures as low as -24°F, making them perfect for gardeners in zones 3-9.
The blue-green leaves of the Egyptian Walking Onion emerge early in the spring, often poking through frost or even snow! These plants grow tall, with stalks reaching up to 3 feet. At the top of each stalk, topsets (bulblets) are formed. These bulblets fall to the ground, and if the conditions are right, they will take root and form new plants. This process of propagation is what gives the Egyptian Walking Onion its name, as they literally “walk” across your garden over time. 🚶♂️
How to Sow and Maintain Seeds - Tree Onions, Egyptian Walking Onions, Topsetting Onions:
Sowing:
Plant the topsets (bulblets) in well-drained soil about 2 inches deep. They prefer full sunlight, though they will tolerate some partial shade. Make sure to plant them about 6-10 inches apart in rows that are 1 foot apart. The best time to plant them is in fall, but they can be planted anytime the soil is workable, even during the winter as long as it's not frozen.
Once planted, water the sets well, but avoid soaking the soil. These onions do not like waterlogged conditions, so it’s important to keep the soil moist, but not wet. 🌿

Once planted, Egyptian Walking Onions require very little maintenance. As the plants mature, they will produce leaves and topsets. You can harvest the greens (leaves) at any time, using them in salads, soups, or for seasoning, just like you would with green onions.
