π° Sweet chestnut - Marron Seeds (Castanea sativa)
π° Price: Package of 5 or 10 seeds
The Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa), also known as the Spanish Chestnut or European Chestnut, is a deciduous tree species in the Fagaceae family, native to Southern Europe and Asia Minor. It is widely cultivated across temperate regions for its edible nut, known as the chestnut. This long-lived tree can reach impressive heights of 20β35 meters (66β115 feet), with trunks often growing up to 2 meters (7 feet) in diameter. In fact, some trees exceed 4 meters (13 feet), including a remarkable 7.5-meter (25 feet) specimen in Sicily. π³
The treeβs bark often shows a net-like (retiform) pattern with deep furrows spiraling in both directions up the trunk. Its broad, lance-shaped leaves are 16β28 cm (6β11 inches) long and have sharp, serrated edges. π The sweet chestnut flowers are monoecious, producing yellowish-white catkins that bloom from late June to July. πΌ The female flowers eventually develop into spiny cupules that contain 3β7 brownish nuts.
Known for their impressive longevity, sweet chestnut trees can live for 500 to 600 years, and in cultivation, some may live over 1,000 years. The Marron cultivar, in particular, produces large, high-quality chestnuts, typically containing only one large nut per husk, unlike wild varieties that can yield multiple smaller nuts. π°
